Which board for real time audio dsp?

I am new to Arduino and I was looking for a board to learn audio dsp. Any suggestions?

My suggestion is that the right board for DSP is not an Arduino.

Is there any manufacturer you would recommend?

While in the past I would agree with that, but now with the Arduino Due board released answerings these kinds of questions gets more...difficult. Would the ARM based Due board be able to handle typical audio DSP applications? I certainly can't answer that, but again things are different now with the Due being available and these kinds of questions are harder to answer then in the past, no?

My suggestion would be to agree with that and add "including Due".

Put it like this. My DAW runs on a 3.4 GHz Intel i7 with 8GB DDR-3. It does 'near realtime' audio DSP, which means that when recording and mixing it uses a reasonably high quality mode, and during final mixdown it uses a non-realtime best quality mode.

Of course, it depends on exactly what you want to do and how low you can put your quality requirements.

If you want to use a small computer rather than a powerul desktop computer or laptop then maybe one of the new, fast 'small ARM devices' that are intended as low-cost general computers rather than real-time hardware controllers would suit.

For example Cubieboard which has a 1G ARM cortex-A8 processor, 256KB L2 cache with 1GB DDR3 @480MHz. Note however that it doesn't have I2S which you may well need for fast audio-rate ADC and DAC. The computing power on that is reasonable for a small device, a lot less than a current desktop machine, but a lot more than an Arduino (including Due).

To learn about audio DSP, the DSP forum on KVR is a good place.
