Which ESP8266 module for home brew arduino PCB?

Hello,

I have been using ESP-01 with my stand-alone arduino system for some time now (see photo) and before doing a new version of PCB am also considering to replace the wifi module with a shielded version.

The option of external antenna also looks attractive, though I am not sure what the improvement in performance will be like.

So, which module would you recommend ?

Thanks

Why change. The ESP-01 only has fewer exposed pins and less memory,
but that’s not important if you only use it as a WiFi slave.
Legal reasons?

The ESP-12 is popular. The -F version is supposed to have a slightly improved aerial over the -E version.
I think the ESP-07 is the one without onboard aerial (for use in a metal enclosure).

As the PCB above is very dense and everything too close together, I d prefer to have the shielded version to avoid any interference with other parts of the system, even though I haven't experiences any so far with the current PCB layout.
