Which powersource do i need for 6 stepper motors?

Hey,

For an Arduino project that i am currently working on, are 3 Adafruit Motorshields v2. and 1 Arduino Uno
Mikrocontroller used.
With these motorshields we want to move 6 stepper motors.

May Question is, which power supply we need to power all the motorshields and the Arduino UNO?

I know that the pins on the Arduino UNO has a current limit of 20mA/pin. That would mean i need a
7-12V, 300mA power supply for the arduino itself.

But which power supply/source do i need or do you recommend if i have 3 motorshield stacked on the Arduino with 6 stepper motors connected to it?

Please help

kind regards

You have not told us what motors you plan to use. There are huge variations in the requirements of different motors and it is quite impossible to answer the question without seeing a link to the datasheet for the motors.

And for most stepper motors a Motorshield is NOT the ideal driver.

Hang on, xyproblem again - why are you talking about Adafruit Motorshield if you want to
drive stepper motors? You need 6 stepper drivers. Anyway what motors? To do what?

Hey

The Adafruit Motorshield supports stepper motors.
we discovered an 33 Years old Robot that drives almost full mechanically, except the 6 stepper motors that handle the axis.
The robotarm was pretty much destroyed so we decided to rebuild him with some old parts that were still working. Thats why we dont have any datasheets of the motors itslef.

These steppermotors are unipolar with 6 wires. Thats all i know.

In many videos i´ve watched, the adafruit shield was mentioned. i looked it up and saw that it can drive 2 stepper motors. so 3 adafruit shield for 6 stepper motors.

OK, you need to provide full information on these motors - photo of the nameplate, size, winding resistance,
anything you have.

If they are 6-wire steppers I will repeat: 'why are you talking about Adafruit Motorshield if you want to
drive stepper motors? You need 6 stepper drivers'

The Adafruit Motorshield supports stepper motors.

No, motorshields support only some stepper motors, and only at low speeds. Steppers are normally current-driven and specialist stepper drivers are way more performant.

6 wire steppers are drivable as bipolar or unipolar.
