Which robot should I build?

  1. Vehicle with wheels that steer like a real car.
  2. Vehicle with wheels that steer like the Bobcat vehicle usually used in construction.
  3. Vehicle with tracks.
  4. Robot with two legs.
  5. Robot with four legs.
  6. Robot with six legs.

I already built vehicles and a small robot with six legs and three servos. I have Vex Robotics set but I can't figure out how to make servo brackets for robots with legs. A robot with two legs should have at least six servos. Any suggestions for building a robot with two legs and at least six servos? I tried websites like Instructables and "Let's Make Robots".

Which robot should I build?

To do what? Wheeled robots, tracked robots, and robots with legs (however many) are suited for different purposes. Most robots with legs do little more than walk clumsily.

If you want your robot to do more than that, a legged version is probably not going to be useful.

I would like a robot that can go up and down stairs, and get things for me. I have seen tracked robots with two set of tracks for going up and down stairs. I think that it's impossible to build a two-legged robot that looks like a man like Data on "Star Trek: Next Generation" TV show. I built a tracked robot but I didn't have enough track material.

a robot that can go up and down stairs, and get things for me.

This is no easy task, in any sense of the word. Very few people have been able
to build robots that can successfully go up/down stairs. Probably the most successful
is packbot by irobot.com. It's fairly large and has tracks.

Then, to "get things for me", is another very difficult task. This means manipulators,
claws, possibly computer vision, on and on. You'll probably also want a control GUI
for your PC, and an RF link.

From the idea you've presented of your level of robotic knowledge, I'd say you'll
want to build another 3 or 4 bots with increasing levels of complexity, before
you're ready to achieve your stated goals.

It's all one big learning curve. Each robot provides more knowledge you can
bootstrap off of. This is a non-trivial amount of work you have in front of you.

You might also want to go ask around for more info on a dedicated robotics
forum, like SRS.
