Which version IDE do I need for ESP8266

Hi, can anyone help? I can't seem to find which version of the IDE I need to programme the ESP8266. I've tried Ver 1.6.1 and couldn't find it in TOOLS/BOARD. I've tried 1.6.5 and still couldn't see it.

I believe you need to got thru the

Tools - Board Manager

to download the non-built-in boards such as the ESP8266

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've checked the tools/board manager and expected to see an option for "Generic ESP8266 board". But it's not there. I've checked Versions 1.6.1 and 1.6.5, but still no luck.
