I don’t know if I would have written a line like that, but I can tell you it would have passed by me without tripping any alarms. As it did above.
That it does the right thing in a demo program is no guarantee that it will for every complying compiler, or even the very Nth next time that line is executed by this one.
If it failed, that would be proof. Success is necessary but insufficient for informing a “take away” from the issue you raise.
Which makes it the stuff of nightmares, so thank you for noticing and pointing it out to us.
