Why do I have to have a board connected to start compile or check run?
Selecting a board via menu makes sense but not to force a real connected one.
Forcing this blocks editing and programming on mobile devices like iPad.
There is no forcing to connect a real board but installing the plug-in i guess.

Even when the plug-in is not installed?
Yes, having the plugin not installed or stopped is the same for the web application.
