Is your question necessary? Put a bandaid on it and keep it dry!
It is not necessary for some things, but likely helpful for others.
For instance, you are not waterproof, yet you can withstand being underwater (for a limited period of time).
Absolutely, sometimes and a definite maybe. Then we have waterproof and water resistant so which did you have in mind. Waterproofing does become important in submarines.
