In view of : "I'm not electronics !" is there really any point in telling the OP that the reason the diode should be in parallel with the coil instead of in series is that : A- the diode drops 0.7 V B- the diode is a "flyback diode" intenddd to shunt " back EMF" C- the reason for using a transistor to drive the relay is to provide isolation between the arduino relay driving pin and the relay power.
