Wifi module is powerful to drive an external antenna?

Hi guys,

I am a new one on Arduino. I am developing an underwater vehicle. I know GIGA R1 has a wifi module on board. But I would like to use a powerful and larger external antenna instead. I wondering how can I make sure the module is powerful to dirve the antenna?

Many thanks!

Hi @ys_nu ,

Welcome to the forum..

need to float a buoy, wifi won't penetrate the water..

good luck.. ~q

Power is irrelevant. Research "impedance matching".

Thanks very much.

Thanks. The communication will only occur when the vehicle is on the surface.

Thanks very much. Very helpful information. The antenna and wifi modul are all compliant with IEEE 802.11b. Does this mean that they are impedance matching?

Not even close, as a bit or research will tell you. In order for any RF power to be transferred from one device to another, the respective impedances must be close to being equal. The RF source impedance must be matched to any coaxial cable used to send the RF to the antenna. And in turn the antenna impedance must be matched to the coaxial cable.
