WiFi OTA Arduino updates

Hi,

I'm totally new to Arduino and circuitry so forgive my question if it sounds ridiculous. I have a project involving couple of robots (run from Arduino boards) that I want to be able to program wirelessly. That is, I want to be able to load code from the Arduino IDE onto the Arduino without tethering via USB. I was looking at buying a pack of these ESP8266 modules http://a.co/hsbtcMo but in my research they aren't as simple as plug and play. I found some instructables on the module but I'm very green and I am just wondering if this is even feasible.

My question/confusion is:

  • are these modules like mini Arduino boards themselves?
  • or do they plug into the Arduino?

How simple would it be to get OTA uploads working with this modules?

Perhaps this might be of use to you. Those modules you posted a url to are useful in some applications, especially if space or weight is a consideration. My goto device where wifi is needed is this. Makes a project a whole lot easier. - Scotty

The link you provided is for programming the ESP8266 over the air. I think the OP wants to program the Arduino, using an ESP (connected to the serial port of the Arduino) instead of a USB-to-Serial converter.
