I just want to ask, how does and what can the WiFI shield that is connected to an arduino work? Do I have to create a separate server for the WiFI shield to activate?

Typically your Arduino becomes a server and or a client depending on your software. You can then communicate with it using a simple web browser.

Might be best/easiest to get a wifi development board and skip trying to mate the wifi to the arduino.
