Does serial print output halt the code during that operation or otherwise interrupt rapid processing? Does the chosen baud rate effect this? I have noticed that the combined code seems to have an effect on my laptop. It's like the serial input from the usb is freezing the laptop. It only does it with that combination of code, so that is why I suspect some influence of the arduino being plugged in via usb.
