Will this work with an Arduino Leonardo or do I have to use the barrel plug? I'm scared that I will fry the pins.
You will fry more than the pins if you connect a 9V battery to the 5V pins. Use the barrel jack instead but be aware that the battery will not last long as it cannot supply the required current
What if i connect the 9v battery to VIN?
That is OK because it is the same as connecting it to the barrel jack but it won't make the battery last any longer
Actually, looking closer at your picture I see that is what you are doing. I had originally thought that you were connecting to the power pins on the ICSP connector
