Win 7 64-bit not looking for driver when Arduino Uno connected - can not install

I have downloaded and installed arduino0022 on my laptop running Win 7 (64-bit) - Win 7 makes a noise when the USB cable is connected but never looks for a driver therefore I can not install a driver or select a Comm port. I suspect there may be a registry entry or something that is keeping the Win 7 OS from looking for a driver when when the USB cable is connected.

Get rid of the 22 it's well out of date. Try again with the 1.o.x from this site.

You're also in the wrong forum - you need Getting started/Trouble shooting.

same here with 1.5.5, but it works on a different machine with ubuntu

Try this mod also once you get 1.0.5 installed.

I didn't need to do anything special to use the Arduino USB drivers on Win 7 Pro/64. If your Arduino isn't being recognised correctly I suggest you use the Device Manager in Windows Control Panel to list the attached devices while the Arduino is plugged in, identify the entry corresponding to the Arduino device (it will probably display an error status), then delete the device and take the option to uninstall the drivers for it. Disconnect and reconnect the Arduino, which will cause you to be prompted again to load the drivers for it. Then follow the usual instructions to load the FTDI USB drivers.

thanks PeterH, this worked for me, although at first the original non-working device in the dev.manager had a cryptic name like "serial converter" and had no error message on it
