Windows 7 not seeing USB as a COM port

Forgive me if this has been covered, I couldn't find it with a search.
This is all new to me and be warned- I am only a slightly computer savvy guy.
I have a somewhat crappy old Samsung RV510 Laptop that I want to use solely for a pretty simple data collection job.
I cannot get the darned thing to connect to the Arduino via USB. There are no COM ports in the list.
I went into control panel and went thru the "add legacy hardware" and installed the COM3 port, but it has a little exclamation mark next to it and it does not work.
Anyone have this experience? Do I need a driver? If so- where can i get it (safely)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The drivers are in the Arduino installation folder in a subfolder called "drivers"

However you havent said where you got your board you are running as that could make a difference.

Maybe you need the CH340 drivers ?

Hard to tell

Maybe a link to where you got the board or a decent picture of it ?

What kind of Arduino is that?
If you got an Arduino nano, the chip in question which needs a special driver, is on the back side and ion most cases, as @Ballscrewbob said, it might be a CH340G chip. Best: attach a sharp picture of your board to your reply.

The board was purchased from a friend of mine who is helping me set it up. I'm not sure where he bought it, possibly Newark.
I will get a picture tonight, but I don't think the problem is really Arduino related, it seems my laptop is not able to use a USB port as a COM port for anything. I have a small data collection app and if you go into that and list the COM ports, it shows none. For some reason it is not listed.

I will get more information tonight.
Thank You for your time.
