Windows 7 x64 sometimes locks up on upload

Greetings. I have a 64 bit Windows 7 box, and Arduino 0017 software. Approximately 10% of the time, uploading code to the Arduino will cause the PC to lock up. Complete lock - mouse stops, no audio.

I have also done some uploads on a 32 bit Windows 7 box, and haven't once seen it lock up.

I'm seeing the exact same problem...Win 7 64 bit...locks up when using serial monitor as well...must be related to the COM communications.

Reinstalling drivers did the trick for me... dont ask me why.

I tried installing the latest FTDI drivers (2/2009) and I still see the problem. About 25% of the time when I upload or use the com monitor, my machine locks up (I have to hold the power switch in to restart...can't even do a normal shutdown)

you dont have used MPROG to modify your FTDI, did you? The error occured the first time when i used that program and stopped after i reverted everything including drivers..

I had trouble installing USB driver on Windows7 /64 bit .
So I Downloaded this driver] :
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM 2.06.00 WHQL Certified.zip
and reinstalled twice the usb driver as shown here :

Follow instructions from Page 5 to page 13.
Then select the right port in your Arduino Bard everything should work OK ()blink / blink
