I bought an arduino UNO a few days back and tried to load it on my laptop that runs on Windows 8. But my laptop doesn't recognise it i.e. the "new hardware found" bubble didn't pop up. So, i am unable to proceed.
Have you checked device manager to see if the device shows up, and what com port it is on? I too did not get the popup for new hardware, but the device was there and even had the most recent driver when I checked it on Windows 8.
