Google "HM-TRP Telemetry". You'll get two pieces; one with a USB port for your computer and containing a USB to serial chip (just like the Arduino) and the other with 5V, GND, TX, RX lines that will interface with the remote Arduino easily.Hummm which range distance, do you know?
It's frequently used with RC aircraft to send sensor readings back to the pilot so you can imagine it will have a pretty good range. Generally it's just quoted at "1 mile" range.
