I use the inexpensive 433 MHz RX/TX modules with VirtualWire and get 300 meters range, line of sight and through one wall, by using dipole antennas on both TX and RX, as shown below. The antennas are connected to GND and ANT on the inner ends, and should be about 34 cm long from tip to tip.
