Pretty new to Arduino and currently working on my first project. I am wondering if it is possible to connect a mpu-6050 accelerometer to an Arduino Uno R3 using an ESP8266 wifi module?

We're using an accelerometer and putting it around someones arm to measure acceleration. And the data has to be transmitted to a laptop wirelessly.
Where does the Uno come into the picture?
The first step in our process was to connect the mpu-6050 with wires to the Uno manually. And now looking for a method to do it without wires. And i presumed you still need the Uno to do that.
Why not simply connect the accelerometer to the 8266?
Ah yes! That might be a lot easier. And then use a batterypack to power the accelerometer and 8266?
