Usually it's easier to think of a project you need/like and... start working from there.
The exhibition/gallery section of the forum does have a lot of nice projects that might sparkle your imagination.

In the beginning of this year the forum has been changed and a lot of exhibition projects can be found on the old forum as well. http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/board,41.0.html
There's a large list of possibilities at "The World Famous Index of Arduino & Freeduino Knowledge"
findable at http://www.freeduino.org/
You can also check the playground, it's a good source as well
http://arduino.cc/playground/
Lots and lots of interesting stuff is also built using an arduino without being mentioned on one of
those 4, quite often googling "arduino" + subject of choice gives tons of results.
Do keep in mind that home-automation may be nice, but it's dangerous once you start working with AC.
Also keep in mind a project should improve something which can... be quite hard if you haven't worked with micro controllers for some time. Changing stuff in order to make it better/implement new functions is often quite difficult and may result in the opposite of what you wish.
I use some X10 wireless window/door sensors around the house. One of them I converted to be a wireless doorbell sensor. Another is on one of our parrots' cage doors to alert us when she manages to let herself out. I'm also planning on putting a sensor on the garage door to alert me if I've forgotten to close it at night.
Other fun ideas might be arduino based temperature/humidity sensors, room occupancy sensors, ambient light sensors, etc.
Are you planning on using the XBee shields? What do you have running on the backend? I personally use Homeseer.
hey,,,
i m using 433Mhz Rf modules for wireless transmittion .
i want to kno some new idea of general Home automation part.
