WS281B LED With D1 Mini

I'm having trouble getting a WS281B working with a D1 Mini and wondered if anyone can help, I think the solution is a simple one but I can't seem to figure it out!

I have a single WS281B connected to my project (5V to 5V, GND to GND and DIn to Pin D3 on the D1 Mini). When I power up from the USB input on the D1 it works no problem but when I switch to a 12V PSU via a DC shield it does not. If I add 3 small jumper cables between the D1 and the LED it starts working again.

Any suggestion much appreciated, thanks...

Show diagram of connections that do and don't work - it's not clear to me what you've connected how in the cases where the DC power shield is in use. Also link to product page for the DC power shield.
