Xbees are expensive, have a unusual form factor requiring an adaptor, and only series 1 and 2 Xbee have libraries and examples targeted at beginners.
On the plus side Xbees have built-in encryption which makes them resistant to hacking.
I can buy a couple dozen nRF24 modules for the price of one X-bee. Depends on what your needs are.
If you should decide to go with nRF24s, skip over the standard RF24 library, and dig into the RF24Network library.
I have used nRF24s over the past 10 years, still use them to this day. They are really easy to use.
