I am having problems moving from xbee 1 (XBee 1mW Wire Antenna - Series 1 (802.15.4) - WRL-08665 - SparkFun Electronics) to 2.5 (XBee 2mW Series 2.5 Wire Antenna - WRL-08695 - SparkFun Electronics). It was my understanding that they are pin compatible and should work just the same for simple serial transmission.

I think the pins are the same but the config of the xbee has changed. where did you read that they are the same?
I don't think the old method of setting the my parameter works on 2.5.

With XBee 2.5 you need to set one of the XBee's as coordinator, so they can make the network and get connected.

thanks for the info... although i am guessing that i am in trouble if i don't have access to a windows computer (i have a mac) to do the firmware transfers.

the x-ctu client for uploading firmware does need windows, but once you have the coordinator and end point firmware loaded you can do any subsequent configuration using AT commands from your mac.
