Xbee Shield doesn't work on startup

I am trying to implement a project where I can power up the arduino and the code automatically runs, driving a wireless transmitter. However, it seems that in order for this to work I need to attach the xbee shield after powerup. I’d like to skip this step, but am unsure if that is possible. Is there a way do this using hardware or software? I looked into a 6-pole switch to place between the arduino and shield, but apparently those are hard to come by. any help would be appreciate…thanks!
