XBee shield hookup

I'm just starting with an XBee S1 dongle and XBee S1 on XBee shield to Arduino Uno connected by USB cable to the same computer.

When I try to "Discover radio Modules on XCTU it says it doesn't recognise any for COM7 (which I have connected arduino to.)

Also when I run the Arduino sketch to "set up a software serial port to pass data between an XBee shield and the serial monitor " (from Sparkfun XBee shield hookup guide) I get the message avrdude;stk500_getsync(1):not in sink:resp=0times0

Wonder if anyone can help?

Not surprisingly, that "link" doesn't work.

There are at least 4 XBee shields, ranging from junk to not bad. Which one do you have?

I have a Arduino XBee shield DEV 08471 ROHS which has now been superceded by another version. WRL 12847

I'm not going to guess who's part numbers those are. Post a link to the hardware if you really expect help.

That link shows 389 retired products. Dream on if you expect ME to figure out which obsolete product you are using and how you have configured it.

May be wrong but it only shows ONE with the title Arduino XBee Shield. OR - all you have to do is go in the search for Arduino Xbee shield retired.
