A brief introduction of Active and Passive Electronic Components

Hello, everyone! I'm a student major in electronics. I am a newbie to here. And the best thing to get close with you is create a thread in my opinion. And because I didn't have a question for now. So I want to post a a brief introduction of Active and Passive Electronic Components. Hope you will like it. And let's be friends! If I did something wrong, please correct me or you can directly tell me.

There are two classes of electronic components – Active and Passive. Both these electronic components are different from each other. This article explains all about active and passive electronic components and the difference between the two.

What are Active Electronic Components?
Active electronic components are those that can control the flow of electricity. Most electronic printed circuit boards have at least one active component. Some examples of active electronic components are transistors, vacuum tubes, silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs).

What are Passive Electronic Components?
Passive electronic components are those that don’t have the ability to control current by means of another electrical signal. Examples of passive electronic components are capacitors, resistors, inductors, transformers, and diodes.

What is a Resistor?

A Resistor is an electrical device that resists the flow of electrical current. Like this page showed. There are kinds of category :Chip Resistor - Surface Mount. Through Hole Resistors. Resistor Networks, Arrays. Chassis Mount Resistors. Specialized Resistors. Accessories. It is a passive device used to control, or impede the flow of, electric current in an electric circuit by providing resistance, thereby developing a drop in voltage across the device.

What is a Capacitor?

A capacitor is a passive electrical component that can store energy in the electric field between a pair of conductors called “plates”. The process of storing energy in the capacitor is known as “charging”. The ability of a capacitor to store charge is measured by its capacitance. Capacitors are used in electronic circuits as energy storage devices. They are also be used to differentiate between high-frequency and low-frequency signals. A wide variety of capacitors are available, including electrolytic capacitors, basic parallel-plate capacitors, and mechanical variable capacitors.

What is a Diode?

A diode is a one-way valve for electricity. Diodes allow flow of electricity in one direction. Most diodes have a painted line on one end showing the direction or flow. The negative side is normally white.

What is an Integrated Circuit (IC)?

Integrated Circuits are package of several complex circuits. ICs are available in a wide variety of packages and sizes. Their applications are as varied as their packages.

What are Transistors?

A transistor is a semiconductor device. It is the fundamental building block of the circuitry in mobile phones, computers, and several other electronic devices. A transistor has very fast response and is used in a number of functions including voltage regulation, amplification, switching, signal modulation, and oscillators. Transistors may be packaged individually or they can be a part of an integrated circuit. Some of the ICs have billion of transistors in a very small area.

Electronic Components

Electronic components, both active and passive, are lifeline of any printed circuit assembly. They both play vital roles in the functioning of any electronic device. Electronic Components are intended to be connected together, usually by soldering to a printed circuit board (PCB), to create an electronic circuit with a particular function.

Seems to me that a switch can "control the flow of electricity" (a relay can even do it electrically!), so try again.

Even for passives this is a bit simplistic..

Now tell us the characteristics and limitations - accuracy, temperature drift , variations with frequency , time etc...

No component is quite what it says on the box - and sometimes it matters.

Even simple resistors have a whole load of different types for very good reasons- from 0201's to huge power devices....

OK - you're a student - you've got a while to learn!

good luck

For a better introduction to electronic components, pick up a printed catalog at an electronics component store such as Maplin or RS in the UK.

Can people from other countries here suggest the most informative free electronic parts catalogs for newbies to go reading ?

@Betty99,

And because I didn't have a question for now. So I want to post a a brief introduction of Active and Passive Electronic Components. Hope you will like it. And let's be friends! If I did something wrong, please correct me or you can directly tell me.

I appreciate your good intentions, but actually, the General Electronics Topic is not really a "database or reference source" where people come to learn electronics. This topic is for people to post questions about electronics (usually, related to a specific application). As already pointed out, even a simple capacitor has tolerences and temperature ratings and tolerances for the temperature ratings and so forth. You could spend quite a bit of time just talking about a 2N2222 transistor. Your post is only going to be on this page for a short time and then will wind up on the "last page" whereas all the posts with questions will continue to get responses until those posts are "solved" ([SOLVED]). There is really not much to " solve " with your post because there are no questions, consequently there will probably not be many responses and your post will drift down to the bottom of the page while other posts will get new responses and jump back up to the top of the page until they cease to get responses and are superceded by new posts. I am not going to say there is anything "wrong" about your post, but to be blunt, it is pretty boring. Most members looking here are looking for problems to solve, and you are not offering one. The more challenging the problem the better. Not much challenge here. I'll let you decide if there is anything wrong with being boring.

And let's be friends!

Friends are honest with each other. Friend tell each other what they really think, not what they think the other person want to here. If your dress sucks and I were your friend I wouldn't hesitate to tell you "I'm not going anywhere with you wearing that dress !"
