A friend of mine wants to get the telemetry out of his experimantal drone. He is using Windows Software where he can attach a 433MhZ device over a COM port and in the drone is the counterpart providing TX and RX to the flight controller. Now the connection with 433 Mhz is very limited.
Now my idea: Choose a virtual port that sends the data to a MKR 1400/1500 to use the public mobile network instead of a flaky 433 Mhz. Due to the network security i think a server in the middle is needed, so something like:
PC<-->COM to some internet protocol<-->Host in the Internet<-->MKR 1400<-->UART TX/RX
It has to be bi-directional and around 256 kBit would be nice.
Any ideas or hints? I mean this is so obvisous that somebody did thas before for another project?!?
Based on my experiences with drones, weight and power consumption were always factors that needed attention. If power consumption, weight, and price are not concerns, I would say it sounds like good idea. Huge range with plenty of bandwidth.
I don't have experience with the MKR board. I hope someone can help, this topic has peaked my interest.
Are you set on using the MKR 1400/1500? Or up for other ideas?
It's a massive drone that can carry 2.5 kg. So the MKR board doen't really count..;=)
Basically my favorite is a MKR1400 because LTE-M(MKR 1500 NB) is not enabled on all antennas based on my experience.
I think it's a byte stream thing into a tcp socket and vice versa.
I'm asking this forum because i'm sure that someone here from this wild bunch did it before
