Hi,
I'm asking for advice on a type of sensor I can place in the basement to look out the ground level window to detect movement (people, cars) in the drive way.
Constraints:
It needs to go through 2 panes of glass, since I would like to install the sensor itself inside the basement
sense about 10 feet (the width of the driveway in the picture).
The other side of the window is my neighbor's property, which consists of a bit of grass and the side of their house. So there's not really anything I can mount as a retroreflective for a beam type sensor
Can be wall powered, and I can install a dc power supply (24V or 12V OK)
needs to work in dark with no exterior lights, fog, any other expected weather condition. But I'll shovel the snow so it won't be covered.
Are there some kind of industrial, single sided sensor I can use?
The RCWL-0516 doppler based motion sensor should do the job, but you'll have to shield the directions you don't want it to sense as it's omnidirectional.

Oh, that's great. I read about these a couple years ago and forgot about them. They basically emit microwave, which penetrates glass. Thanks.

Maybe mount it behind the wood sidings instead for better penetration.
As you have access to mains power then another option might be something like a Raspberry Pi, a camera and MotionEye software.
