hi All,
i downloaded the 2.3.8 version. working right a few weeks. there is any happened on my laptop (ubuntu 24) and i can not executed anymore the ardunio ide.
i tried to started in command line. i get the message: bash: .: ./arduino-ide_2.3.8_Linux_64bit.AppImage: binary cannot be executed.
Could you please support me fix this problem?
thank in advance!
Do not key in messages, do screen grabs. You will also need to show directories with attributes etc to ensure it is executable.
Remember we can NOT see what you see, so do screen grabs of what you see.
Hi @fatter. Try downloading a fresh copy of the AppImage. It is available from the Software page here:
https://www.arduino.cc/en/software#ide-download-section
It is possible that your local file was somehow corrupted.
Thank you very much your respond. olders files will be deleted before download it.
downloaded it. set to runnable status. dont started. i tried to command line too:
error message is: not exist this direktory or file. i read other pages the need to install fuse but it installed before:
fuse3/noble,now 3.14.0-5build1 amd64 [telepítve, automatikus]
gvfs-fuse/noble-updates,noble-security,now 1.54.4-0ubuntu1~24.04.2 amd64 [telepítve, automatikus]
libfuse2t64/noble,now 2.9.9-8.1build1 amd64 [telepítve]
libfuse3-3/noble,now 3.14.0-5build1 amd64 [telepítve, automatikus]
i used the command : sudo usermod -a -G dialout with my own name too
could you give me any other ideas. i dont wish reinstall the ubuntu again ![]()

Could this situation be causing the problem?
Please don't paraphrase error messages when sharing them on the forum. Copy the exact text of the message and paste it to your forum post.
Please do this:
- Attempt to start the AppImage package from the command line, exactly as you did before when you encountered that error message.
- Use the mouse to select all the text in the terminal window.
- Press the Ctrl+Shift+C keyboard shortcut.
This will copy the selected text to the clipboard. - Open a reply here on this forum topic by clicking the "Reply" button.
- Click the
<CODE/>icon on the post composer toolbar.
This will add the forum's code block markup (```) to your reply to make sure the error messages are correctly formatted.
- Press the Ctrl+V keyboard shortcut.
This will paste the output into the code block. - Move the cursor outside of the code block markup before you add any additional text to your reply.
- Click the "Reply" button to publish the post.
No.
today start the system I attempt to start the AppImage file from command line. i get the next error message:
potyesz@potyesz-ThinkPad-T430:~/Asztal/arduino-ide_2.3.8$ . ./arduino-ide_2.3.8_Linux_64bit.AppImage
bash: .: ./arduino-ide_2.3.8_Linux_64bit.AppImage: bináris nem hajtható végre
The problem is the first . here:
This causes the contents of the file that is passed as an argument to be executed in the shell:
https://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bash.html#index-_002e
(similar to running an executable shell script file)
You should not use this to execute a binary file like the AppImage package.
So remove the first . from the command and try again:
./arduino-ide_2.3.8_Linux_64bit.AppImage
ahh. ok.
potyesz@potyesz-ThinkPad-T430:~/Asztal/arduino-ide_2.3.8$ ./arduino-ide_2.3.8_Linux_64bit.AppImage

4, set to mode this 4755 and working right the Arduino Ide
thank you very much!
Thanks for taking the time to post an update @fatter!
This error is caused by the AppArmor security software blocking the Arduino IDE application from starting.
There is some valuable discussion on this subject here:
In that thread, multiple solutions are described by an Arduino community member. In addition to the solution you found, and alternative is described, which is to create an AppArmor policy for the Arduino IDE application:
You can also create a new AppArmor profile for the Arduino IDE (that allows a non-root user to use the sandboxing in a specific application). If you copy the AppImage file to
/usr/local/bin/arduino(this is the new name of the AppImage file), you can create an AppArmor profile with a configuration file, for example, in/etc/apparmor.d/usr.local.bin.arduino, containing:abi <abi/4.0>, include <tunables/global> profile arduino /usr/local/bin/arduino flags=(unconfined) { userns, include if exists <local/arduino> }and reloading all AppArmor profiles with:
sudo service apparmor reloadNow you can run the Arduino IDE without the sandboxing error.
I have verified that the AppArmor policyapproach does fix the problem.
Unfortunately since I am not knowledgeable in this area and the AppArmor documentation is absolutely horrendous. For this reason, despite my best efforts, I was not able to effectively analyze the policy provided by the community member. So I can't officially endorse the installation of that policy. However, I don't have any reason to believe it is flawed or dangerous, and I am using it on my own Ubuntu 24.04 machine.
