Arduino IDE v12 - hang when compiling

I find that the IDE frequently hangs when I click the 'compile' button. The application stops responding.. I've waited as long as 10 minutes before giving up.. Usually it only takes 30-60 seconds to compile.

Is there anything I should check?
Using on Windows XP Pro with all service packs/updates.

sometimes I accidentally "select" some text on the console output screen (the black and white output), and that freezes things, till i set focus on that screen and hit enter.
