Arduino not recognized by HP Pavillion laptop (but works on other computers!)

I am having a problem connecting the arduino to my HP Pavillion laptop. I have used multiple boards (UNO, Nano, Mini) on other computers and Operating Systems successfully (2 versions of OSX and other PC's), but I have never been able to have my board be recognized by my HP Pavillion laptop. In fact I have a friend who has the same computer and the same problems. All of the drivers have been installed, I have tried as many fixes as I can think of and can google, but no success. When I plug it in, my device manager only recognizes any of the versions of arduino as a USB Serial Port, and when I try to update the drivers, the computer claims that the drivers are up to date? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hello,
I have the same problem with a laptop (hp nc6220) ... very strange :frowning:

My wife has HP Pavillion - seems 1 particular USB has to be used first to get the others to wake up.
