16u2 not 32u2, but there it is used as a USB to TTL converter
That one, that is on the Micro & Leonardo boards where it serves as the main processor.
That is hardware. If you look at the pinout of the MCU you will find 2 pins marked USB- & USB+
Yes it can and yes it does as far as i know. A little surprised you didn't know that.
I just wanted to say thank you Budvar - you were spot on and this worked perfectly. It's a problem that I would have never overcome on my own or through my own googling - it seems like quite an obscure solution for a noob like me.
