AutoDesk EAGLE is END OF LIFE

I wanted to give everyone a heads up. i got an email from AutoDesk saying that they are planning to stop support for EAGLE. what they're doing is trying to force everyone to use FUSION 360, which I can understand from a business point of view, I guess. But what about the people that use the product? they forgot about us or just don't care. Me, I'm moving to Altium Designer, and I suggest you all do the same. Altium is actually running a promotion right now. $995/year for EAGLE users looking to make a move: Go Altium | Altium

but honestly, how would they know that you're switching from EAGLE???? I'm going to jump on this while I can.

I've wondered for a while when this would happen. I'm using Fritzing, plan to teach myself KiCad. Might try your link though.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for giving this attention.

Autodesk gives EAGLE users three years to move to Fusion 360.
I rarely use it, but I moved to KiCad a few years ago. It is okay for me (hobby use). Others use online websites. KiCad can import a *.sch file from EAGLE, that works well.

NanoCAD is a free AutoCAD workalike.

$995 /year ? That is surely not simply hobby usage.

My brain autocorrected that to 99.5/year. Wow. I'll stick to fritzing at that price.

haha yeah not $99.5. For me its worth it since I do a little more than just hobby stuff. Its still basic but I think its a good move for me since I may want to grow a little bit more.

Hmm. Joined 6 hours ago, has this ONE post. Altium shill?

$995/y is not an "EAGLE Replacement" for most of us.

Not that the loss of EAGLE isn't newsworthy and ... really annoying. I'm still running the "non-profit" version (7.6?) that I paid something like $150 for. But I always had the backup plan that "I can buy a commercial version if anyone ever wants to pay me." And that seems gone.

KiCAD seems the likely path, but it won't run on my Mac :frowning:

If it's too old maybe you could use macports?
No idea how.
From Kicad website:
" Users on older versions of macOS may be able to use KiCad by installing through MacPorts or building from source. The KiCad team is does not have the resources to provide technical support or bugfixes for users on these platforms."
I want to get into PCB/schematic design so I am going to get KiCAD

Hmm. The MacPorts part is new, I think (and only one major version behind.)
Previously it was "you can try to build from source, but it's expected to be very finicky." Or something like that. :frowning:

Well if you have an older Mac with an intel processor you could try to double boot Windows on it….

After I responded I thought the same thing.

I've used DesignSpark for a couple of boards. The free version has everything I need.

I tried KiCad but it was very difficult to make a custom part by modifying an existing part. It's probably not THAT hard once you've done once or twice but there were a lot of steps and when I thought I was done there were more steps and I was frustrated and decided to try something else.

I was using DesignSpark 10, and they recently went to version 11. A message popped-up that says version 10 will stop working... That's a little scary if they can shut it off and I haven't tried version 11 yet.

P.S.
I wouldn't mind playing a couple hundred dollars, but not $999, and I HATE subscriptions! I own most of my software (and multiple copies of Windows) but most of it is free/open source.
