I think the insight that was lacking is that you break a circuit to insert an ammeter, you don't connect the probes to the complete circuit. An ammeter is a clever piece of wire, if you like!
Handy hint: always store a multimeter with the probes in the position for reading volts - if you leave it in current mode its a short-circuit waiting to happen when you next use it.
