Beginner 2x20 LCD

Hi folks.

Any insight into how to get this LCD going? It's a Topway LMB202D, 2x20. It has the following pin sockets on it:

RIGHT SIDE:
A
K

LEFT SIDE:
1 through 16

The documents here say to #include <LiquidCrystal.h>, and to assign rs and rw pins, and digital pins. I have no clue which is which.

I'll keep looking, but it doesn't really say much so far.

Cheers

Do you have a spec sheet? A fast quest via google didn't turn up anything. The row of pins down one side "could" be the normal 16 pins found on a standard LCD parallel display.

Have you tried connecting it up per the parallel wiring sample on the LCD library?

Good luck - and do post any results you have.

Unfortunately I have nothing. I DID read about the standard 16 pins found on the Hitachi standard, so I'm thinking it is that. I have done nothing to the unit as of yet.

The problem is that I'm not sure what some of the pins mean. Wiper, for instance?

Not sure what the rs and rw pins would be either.

Well Rich, don't tell anyone, but I didn't know what most of the pins meant myself a couple weeks ago (still don't fully understand most of them:) - but I connected my LCD up with pin #1 to where the sample showed, right on thru pin #16 and tried that.

Most of these things seem to be pretty bullet proof... well, as long as the blue smoke doesn't get out anyway ::slight_smile:

Since you don't have any info, I'll bet you don't have much money in it... so not a lot gambled... You know what they say - no guts, no glory!

I wish I could help more, but without photos and datasheet - it's really hard to tell much.

Have fun and good luck,

If you type "Topway LMB202D" into The Google, the very first result takes you to the manufacturer's site, where you can download the datasheet.

BeerRich:

Your display operates just like any other character mode LCD. The only difference is in the orientation of the 16 pins. The 16 pins on the left side of your display correspond, one for one, to the 16 pins on the top of the more common displays.

Just follow the connections shown in the tutorial at http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/LiquidCrystal and use the sample code shown there.

The term 'wiper' corresponds to the middle pin of the potentiometer.

Hi folks, thanks for asking.

I did The Google, and I did The Clusty as well. Still couldn't find the datasheet, regardless of the site. Some of these Asian sites are ... leaving things out?

Thanks Don for the clarification on the term "wiper".

I'll give it a shot now, report what happens.

Cheers

A and K would be the Anode and Kathode for the backlight, sometimes they are "duplicated in two of the 16 pins in the 1 to 16 connector row.

OK I have to hit my local supplier to get some more items later on today. Here is an image (mine is slightly different):

There is a thread in another forum here:

http://mbed.org/forum/mbed/topic/195/

Now wasn't a google search easy:

http://www.pdfsea.com/down/download.php?auth=WjIFbg99ATgEaAQ3U2laPgcxVjYGaVVxV2ZWYl05UmddJFMlUjsDaQhpADhQIAM%2BBSlWdgIkUz1cZFVpD2MGMFo%2FBW0PbwF5BGUEMlMgWmgHd1ZrBjVVMld0ViRdAVJNXQFTAFIWAw0IIgAbUBoDEgU0VjMCZlMVXCVVeA9jBjBacAVyD34BNwRzBCdTIFpgB2lWZgZtVWZXMlY9XWNSNF1nU2JSZgNmCD4AcVA%2BAyAFO1Y7AmNTf1w6VTkPNQZ4WmAFOQ8kAWEEMwR1UzlaYAd2VnEGP1UlVz0%3D
That explains the pins top right and which is which is explained on the LCD diagram. Use the standard liquidcrystal library (no need to understand what the pins do yet) and you should be away

Mowcius

Not really. Check your browser for that link. Also, pdfsea never showed any manual. I DID do this before posting here, like I said. But, just to amuse you, I went into pdfsea and searched for the very same term. This is what I found:

search Topway LMB202DResults:0

So, neither the manufacturer nor pdfsea have any sort of manual.

4th link down when searching for "Topway LMB202D" and two clicks later there is the datasheet.

Anyway have you got it working now?

Mowcius

LOL 4th down in Google is this very thread.

Haven't been to my supplier yet. It's 6:30 am here.

Hmm, I dunno what messed up google you are using...

4th down for Topway LMB202D

Yeah we get different results. PDFSea says they have it, but I couldn't find the link anywhere.

Are you using Google UK? I'm using the Google Google in the US.

Didn't that datasheet link I posted work for you then?

Mowcius

Nope. Can you find the page where it's mentioned?

Hmm, weird. I PM'd you, send me your email and I'll email it to you...

Mowcius

Rich,

try this:

But don't ask me how.

Thanks BT. I had that diagram sent to me. I'm off to my supplier in about 20 minutes. Let's hope I can get her going.
