I'm a newbie, so forgive me if this question has been asked before. I want to build an electronic music box with the Arduino, with optical sensors that detect black vs white bars on a music sheet. What would be a good pick for the sensors? And do they work no matter the light conditions?
To detect bars on a sheet you should use a reflective optical sensor.
If you don't want to be troubled by ambient light it is better to work with an IR one.
Even IR sensors get troubled by ambient light.
You migh have to go to modulated IR light to remove this.

yes that looks like the same one as I sent the link for only made up on a board. It is better to get the type where emitter and detector are set at an angle as that way they have a focus.
