After upgrading the radio module firmware and installing the Beta version of the ArduinoBLE library, I installed the HardwareBLESerial library and ran the SerialPassthrough example. I then opened up the Adafruit Bluefruie Connect app on my iPhone, and voila, bidirectional communication.
I am one happy camper. Thanks to the Arduino team!
