Hi all!.
Im working on a gear shifter project for a 100cc/1cyl motorcycle. For the project i need to sense the motorcycle speed and engine rpm.
Ive used an IR sensor on the wheel to detect wheel speed but I need help in sensing the engine rpm.
I’ve read other forums regarding this but I still have some confusion.
What do I do?
1.wrap a coil around the spark plug and detect the pulses. If so, then how many coils and if I need something else like resistors, etc.
2. Detect the signal from the ignition coil. I did not understand anything in this so if anyone can explain the procedure.
3.Any other alternative?
Is it an ancient bike or electronic ignition fuel injection?? There will be some input to the HV coil to fire it most likely Hall effect sensor old systems used points. You can use that signal for tach. If there is a mechanical speedo its cable can be modified for speed. Other things to look at are proximity sensors.
You're designing a gear shifter, so you know in which gear you are. Then the speed of the wheel gives you the speed of the engine. So you can use the speed of the wheels to know when to shift.
By HV coil do you mean the ignition coil? I am sure the bike has a ignition coil but it is quite old. What do I do with the coil?
Should i just connect one arduino pin to the coil input or something else.
Pls explain. Sorry I am a newbie.
Why don't you start explaining in detail what bike you actually have, and what kind of fuel system, etc? That gives a clue on what possible inputs there are for this system.
Thank you @roli001 for your input.
I will try out the system in a few days and i believe this system will indeed work.
Thank you again for Sharing the valuable info.
