I ordered an arduino mega, and I am expecting it to be delivered tomorrow. One question I have not seen an answer to. When I connect it to my computer, do I need to disconnect it from the wall wart DC power supply first? Can it be safely powered by both at the same time?

Yes, power power sources can be attached at the same time. FYI if both are attached the current will be drawn from the external source.
