distance of a couple of feet should be no problem or cable quality over that distance
transmission errors are reported when there is no ACKnowledgement from a receiver
this can be caused by
- receiver switched off or faulty
- can speed different between transmitter and receiver
- incorrect wiring etc etc
have a look at this post which had similar problems
have you an oscilloscope or logic analyser to view signals?
