Yes you can but do not expect anything good to happen. You probably will fry the LED immediately. It is also possible to force the regulator into shutdown and if left long enough it will fry. A simple rule, light bulbs are voltage driven devices, LEDs are current driven devices so add a resistor in the 300 Ohm range. You can use a calculator and size it for about 10 mills or whatever it is rated for, less never hurts and it will last longer.
