Captcha a pain when registering

I just registered on the site. It took me several goes to find an unused Username, I guess I am not very original. The problem though was that each time I tried a Username that was already registered I had to start the registration process again and, most annoyingly, run the Captcha each time.

Obviously I did manage to register on the Arduino Forum but on other sites I have given up because of the difficulty of finding an unused Username and dealing with Captchas. You probably do lose some potential members because of this.

We get a LOT of bogus accounts, promoting all sorts of dubious products, from ladies of negotiable affection, to real-estate agencies.

We're very happy the new registration process appears to have largely eliminated these.

If people don't want our help bad enough to get through the captcha then we're not going to miss them.

If it weeds out people with no patience it may be a good thing.

Can we also implement tests for politeness, tolerance and a sense of humour ?

Patience and tolerance are excellent virtues. Unfortunately they aren't mine.

I guess that means you are polite and have a sense of humour

I have a sense of humour - why else would I be on here?

My comment was intended to be helpful. I had to try four maybe five usernames before I found one that was not used. Each time I had to fill in the Captcha, so I have patience and persistence.

The more members the site has though the harder it will become to register and eventually it will become almost impossible - as I have seen on other sites.

It is good that the registration is keeping out advertisers and Estate Agents but you might want to keep an eye on new genuine membership declining with time.

Oh I do like a good dose of sarcastic sideswipe humour in the morning with my coffee.

"but you might want to keep an eye on new genuine membership declining with time."

That might slow down the multitude of first time one question posters who fly in, throwdown an unanswerable question, then fly off never to be heard from again.

I could be good with that.

This presupposes that newcomers will accidentally choose a username that is already in use. I have rarely had that problem on the Forums (Fora?) I have joined.
