Controlling one board with another

Hello,

Just starting with Arduino and would like to know if it is possible to control one board with another. IE. One with Wi-Fi and a Joy stick shield and the other with anWi-Fi on the other that would control servos on a robot.

Yes this is possible and you also have examples you find online as well as under the Arduino Examples.
Files :: Examples :: WIFI

This has been done before, so you should be able to find everything you need with a simple search on both the forum and the internet.

Make simple things happen before you start getting ideas. That's not to say that ideas and goals are bad but practical ideas based on what you can do have ways of working out much easier.

There are other wireless alternatives that may be easier to implement than WiFi - unless you need to take advantage of the global range of WiFi.

Well, the last I read was that there might be issues with using the arduino wifi shields in the server mode. You might use other wireless adapters that can send/receive bytes used for commands. Get the peoject working using wires, then move to wireless adapters.
