In related news from a few decades ago, this crazy thing called an "automatic transmission" has been invented.
The automatic transmission will change the roadways of America. This system can factor in the acceleration, torque, speed, braking, and angle of the car to shift automatically to the required gear, resulting in the epitome of efficiency and engineering.
Ok, I made that up. But seriously, it will be very difficult to factor in all the variables, humans (like me) do it by listening to the engine and feeling the car. When going uphill, it strains and cannot accelerate as quickly, so I may downshift. Automatic cars exist (and pass safety tests). Sorry to rain on your parade but I think you are underestimating this over ambitious project.
i m not agree with you in this
because :
1- is difficult to know engine speed and Vehicle speed
2- no need i think..
while we braking and " heel and toe" for down shifting ,,we never push gas pedal with counting and math ...we just push a gas pedal a little ,, its enough for engine .no need know exactly and math .
for example :
,we have a " throttle actuator " for RPM control ,600 RMP higher before every change gear and downshift is OK for every situation .
and we must say to arduino :
:
you should do 600 RPM higher for this purpose ..must :
5 degree or. etc ... actuation
I think the OP is not aware that all the stuff we do automatically when using a manual gearbox, has to be converted to values and mathematics and logic when you put it in a controller.
When you change gear in the human world
you know the engine speed and road speed from your senses, eyes and ears.
you know what gear you are in from your senses.
you know what position the clutch is in from your senses.
Likewise the controller will need sensors
to sense engine speed and road speed.
to sense what gear you are in.
to sense what position the clutch is in.
I don't think the OP realizes how wonderful our body and brains perform and how difficult it is to replicate.
The human driver also knows that she is approaching a hill (and whether the road will rise or fall) or that she is approaching a junction and plans to turn left or that she is trying to find a parking slot at the supermarket.
here i made a simple concept
i have a question
what we do when we don't have a PC in car?
arduino need USB connector to PC
so we don't have a PC in car
can it flash or what !!!
If I may chime in here. I'm new to arduino and this forum but I'm decades deep in automotive technology (repairing, building, modifying, retrofitting and tuning).
OP, you made the comment that having a torque converter is a problem. Why? What is your application? Race, drift, off-road, daily driving, rally?
There are Auto transmission set-ups that allow stand-alone use in cars without electronic control capability. Also full manual paddle shift capable. Choose your torque converter stall speed properly and your light-years ahead of your current path. Also, choosing a system with a heavy duty, PWM torque converter clutch and properly programming said clutch will allow almost exactly what you're trying to do.
It may be worth your time to investigate this route a little bit.
yes
there are some kind of paddle shifter in market .
and i want change and find best position in this programing also we have many kind of options on our hands
also cheaper
torque converter is standard part inside a automatic transmission .so we don't have an automatic transmission .we have a manual one and we don't want change it also because we need this gear ratios
torque converter also have a big problem that you know ,,
it waste energy and power up to 20 % some times
and its low and have delay for our purpose is not so good
A properly built and tuned auto transmission actually shifts faster than the fastest driver in the world could ever soft clutch to clutch. A torque converter actually multiplies torque when in vortex flow(low speeds). Also, the torque converter does not cause much parasitic loss, especially with the torque converter clutch locked up. That being said, the rotating mass inside the transmission does waste power so I do understand your desire to stay away from autos.
In terms of your desired project, if your engine is computer tunable, please consider a brief timing retard at the moment of shifting. Properly tuned, this will simplify clutch feel and application. Also, this will protect your drivline from erroneous clutch slam and should be unnoticeable, again if properly timed.

Robin2:
Something may waste power but it is not a rotating mass - otherwise the earth would have spiraled into to the sun a few billion years ago.

I enjoyed this!
As the transmission doesn't have the benefit of magnetic forces to keep it spinning it takes energy to cause and maintain the rotation of the mass of metal, fluid and friction material which is stacked and intersplined down the center of an automatic transmission. If the torque of the engine is removed the rotation will immediately begin to slow and will stop shortly thereafter. There is also a secondary parasitic power loss in the form of fluid shearing inside the fluid pressure pump which is bolted directly to the engine via the flex plate.
The fluid pump is always leaching power anytime the engine is running while the "tree" (slang for the above mentioned stack of metal etc.) is only using engine power when rotating. Portions of the tree may or may not be spinning clockwise or counterclockwise depending on the gear currently engaged.
Wellarmedlamb:
it takes energy to cause and maintain the rotation of the mass of metal
Newton's first law:
An object that is at rest will stay at rest unless a force acts upon it.
An object that is in motion will not change its velocity unless a force acts upon it.
But I think we all are aware of that, so can we continue explaining why OPs objective is ridiculous?
It's too bad though because this is a novel idea with some useful merits but in the end is a niche that has already been filled... By performance computerized automatic transmissions.
To the OP: for ideas consider researching 2 and 3 speed powerglide type transmissions used for drag racing. Particularly look into the air and solenoid shifters used in these applications. Your goal is much more complicated but there's systems can be operated by rpm, throttle window switches. You would still have to figure out the clutch but it might help get you started.
i find some help from arduino help .
must write an algorithm .
we have :(4DC Motors gearboxes 12 V .G-sensor . 2push buttons ( R. N ) and a potentiometer join with gas pedal also a LCD )
who can help for write ( below )algorithm in to arduino language
:
if push + button:
do below process :
show 1st gear in lcd
also do :
{ DC gearbox motor (A) : spin 50 rev .then stop ( for clutch ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor (B) : spin 50 rev . then stop ( for shift selector arm ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor ( C) : spin 50 rev .then stop ( for shifter rod ) .
}
then if push + for next time ..do the same process ( UP )
...
until 5th gear
.
if push - button : do :
show down shifting one by one in lcd
do
{ Dc gear box motor ( D) spin 20 rev .then stop ( for butterfly throttle control ) ( heel and toe )
DC gearbox motor (A) : spin 50 rev .then stop ( for clutch ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor (B) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) . then stop ( for shift selector arm ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor ( C) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) .then stop ( for shifter rod ) .
}
and do for all until neutral gear (0 gear )
also if :
push braking button ( push button Q for example ) ..do :
read a ( G SENSOR ) if G sensor say is fast braking ( it show braking hard ) : then
.do fast below process :
{ Dc gear box motor ( D) spin 20 rev .then stop ( for butterfly throttle control ) ( heel and toe )
DC gearbox motor (A) : spin 50 rev .then stop ( for clutch ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor (B) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) . then stop ( for shift selector arm ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor ( C) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) .then stop ( for shifter rod ) .
}
if G sensor say slow braking : ( it show braking is soft) then :
do slowly below process .until neutral gear ( 0 ) then stop the process
:{ Dc gear box motor ( D) spin 20 rev .then stop ( for butterfly throttle control ) ( heel and toe )
}
if push NEUTRAL button .( is different and separate button from + and - )
do: show N in lcd then :
{DC gearbox motor (A) : spin 50 rev .then stop ( for clutch ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor (B) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) . then stop ( for shift selector arm ) then do :
}
if push R button ( rear button ) :
show R in lcd then :
DC gearbox motor (A) : spin 50 rev .then stop ( for clutch ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor (B) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) . then stop ( for shift selector arm ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor ( C) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) .then stop ( for shifter rod ) .
form 0 speed to 1st and 2nd gear only do below process ..
show 1st gear in lcd then read potentiometer and spin DC gearbox motor ( A only ) { depend of potentiometer number ) if potentiometer do fast spin DC motor (A) fast 50 rev .if potentiometer do slow .then spin DC motor (A) slow 30 rev [ it means half clutch for start 1st gear and 2nd gear]
do :
DC gearbox motor (A) : spin 30 rev and follow potentiometer until 50 rev .then stop ( for half clutch ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor (B) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) . then stop ( for shift selector arm ) then do :
Dc gearbox motor ( C) : spin 50 rev in cw direction ( for example ) .then stop ( for shifter rod )
