ECG two electrode mode with SparkFun Single Lead Heart Rate Monitor - AD8232

Hello dear Arduino community,

as I purchased the AD8232 Heart Rate Monitor sensor from Sparkfun and an Arduino Uno, I would like to know, how can I use the two electrode mode with this particular sensor. What steps do I have to follow.
I have read in the datashet the following sections "Right Leg Drive Amplifier", "AC Leads Off Detection" and "Heart Rate Measurement Next to the Heart" , but I could not understand the setup for this "two electrode mode".
Is there someone in this forum who have accomplished to work with this "two electrode mode"?

I will appreciate every help and experience I can get from the forum-members

Thank you very much in advance

Best regards

I suspect that the Myoware sensor uses the same IC, so follow these instructions for three lead placement:

Hello jremington,

thank you very much for your reply. I have read the datasheet of MyoWare but I can not see any instructions for two lead placement. I want to extract the reference lead/electrode of MyoWare for my ECG measurement.

Have a nice day

The reference lead is the "RL" (right leg) lead, RLD on the IC. Use a battery powered setup to avoid ground loops.

Hello jremington,

how can I construct such a battery powered setup? By using a 9V battery with its adapter connected to Arduino?

Best regards

Kosta

Yes.

Hello jremington,

to understand it right, to activate the ECG-measurement with the „two electrode“-option, as it is mentioned in the datasheet, I will just plug my Arduino Uno and SparkFun Sensor with a 9V-battery.

Thank you very much for your help

Best regards

Kosta

What's the big deal about using 2 instead of 3 electrodes? On the other hand, hooking up the lo+ and the lo- wires on the AD8232 is a nuisance and not really necessary if the sketch is modified.

Perhaps you've discovered this, but when this says it's a single lead, it really means
"single channel".
It does use the 3 leads to create the single channel.

A lead is on the right leg as the "grounding" lead (RL)
Another lead is on the right Arm and the other on the left arm.

There are some images that show how to place the pads on the chest, in the right areas to pick up a bit more solid signal.
