Error in using GSM shield with BSNL sim (India)

I have been trying to run the 'TestGPRS' example and the following error keeps coming up -

I have running the ardiuno through the USB port, could it be because it needs to be powered by a 12V source?

The error means "Not registered, but ME (Mobile Equipment) is currently trying to attach or searching an operator to register to."

Running a GSM/GPRS device from USB is not recommended as they can momentarily draw up to 2 amps.

You can plug in your SIM incorrectly and get that error. Need to see code.
