The DM542 is quite different from an LCD, it requires a device that can sink at least 10mA and the TXs can't do that.
With your Accelstepper program, check the voltage on the DM542 DIR- pin, it should be close to 0
There may be other problems as well, such as incorrect switch settings on the DM542
