ESP32 - Power supply problem?

OK. So. I've been driving myself crazy trying to get sound out of an Esp32, with zero success. Lots of help on here, but no success.

But...

All sound items need an external power supply, and that may be my problem.

Setting the simplest setup I can, here, my ESP32 runs fine using usb-c from my laptop, but powered like this, nothing. And if it can't power my ESP32 it presumably can't won't power anything else.

So at this most ridiculously basic setup, have I overlooked anything, please?

Note the breaks in the red and blue lines.

Suggests the +V (red) and GND (blue) buses are split in the middle as in not connected.

Good idea to check wiring is what you think it shhould be with a multimeter.
